What to know
Skin laxity can reflect changes in skin, connective tissue, fat, muscle, or the structures beneath them. The phrase skin tightening covers several technologies, and the visible concern may not respond to each one in the same way.
Start with the exact concern
Ask the provider to describe what they believe is creating the change you see. Mild surface texture, a small fat bulge, reduced elasticity, muscle separation, and excess skin are different findings. A device that affects one layer may have little effect on another.
The FDA describes several energy-based technologies that may make skin feel or look tighter or temporarily improve the appearance of cellulite or circumference. Radiofrequency applies heat. Therapeutic ultrasound delivers sound-wave energy. Light-based devices heat tissue in a different way. The intended use and treated body area depend on the exact device.
Temporary improvement is still a limited claim
The FDA notes that body-contouring results may be temporary, may require multiple sessions, and may not create the desired effect for every client. Ask how improvement was measured, when it was assessed, and whether maintenance was part of the study.
Words such as lift, firm, tighten, and rejuvenate can describe different outcomes. Request photographs or measurements from the device’s authorized information rather than relying on a general category name.
Risks vary by device
Radiofrequency procedures can cause pain, redness, swelling, blisters, burns, nodules, pigment change, or scars. Therapeutic ultrasound can cause burns and nerve damage. Some technologies should not be used near certain implanted devices or metal. Skin condition, active wounds, scars, tattoos, and pigment response can also matter.
Radiofrequency microneedling is a separate procedure that combines needles with RF energy. In an October 2025 safety communication, the FDA reported serious complications with certain uses, including burns, scarring, fat loss, disfigurement, nerve damage, and the need for medical or surgical treatment.
Questions before treatment
A clear plan should name the tissue, the device, the intended effect, and the limits with equal precision.
- What tissue or finding are you trying to change?
- What is the exact device, model, and FDA-authorized use?
- Was that device reviewed for this body area and intended effect?
- What result is realistic for my degree of laxity?
- Which risks apply to my skin, health history, scars, tattoos, medications, or implanted devices?
- How many sessions and what maintenance may be needed?
- What alternatives could address the concern more directly?
- Who provides follow-up if I develop a burn, pigment change, nerve symptoms, or another unexpected effect?
